Chapter 4 ♦ ♦ ♦

When Sonya awoke up to the ranger’s face, she tried to scream but he put his hand on her mouth as soon as she opened her mouth. He whispered to her to be quiet. Then Sonya had a vision, she saw trolls and her and the ranger were running away. Somehow Sonya knew his heart was good and didn’t mean her any harm. Even through she disliked how he had a dagger to her throat, she tried to trust him. One thing Sonya wanted to know was, why her? Why now? When she got on and he followed her up she looked for Elerson but she couldn’t see her. Sonya knew the unicorns weren’t there or the ranger would have been scared and wouldn’t have taken her. They ran in the forest deep into the other side of the Alosta forest. Sonya was a little scared that the trolls would get them and eat them.

The horse the ranger was brown with a black mane and Sonya sensed that this ranger was with the horse along time; it seemed to care a lot for the ranger. “Don’t be scared.” He said kicking the horse to go faster. That is all he would say and Sonya didn’t want to talk. The horse ran fast but with wrong turn the horse ran into a troll’s camp. Sonya never saw one up close but she was to close the horse did a quick stop jerking Sonya and the ranger forward. The trolls stared at there unwanted guest with small black eyes. There was a huge roar from one of the closer trolls to Sonya and the ranger. All the other trolls started in uproar and went crazy they all rant at Sonya and the ranger. The horse jumped and ran the other way. The trolls though were fast even though the horse was fast too but it had two people on its back. The horse slowed down; the trolls were gaining on them.

One troll ran next to them and grabbed out; the ranger dodge the troll’s huge hand, but it tried again. This time the ranger wasn’t so lucky. The troll’s big hand knocked off the ranger. Sonya stopped the horse and saw the troll sniff the ranger. Sonya turned away she was about to kick the horse. The ranger was knocked out and the troll picked him up and yelled. Sonya jumped down from the horse and faced the troll. The troll roared madly at her and dropped the ranger. Then it came after Sonya. Sonya didn’t have much time to react. She jumped dodging the huge theist. The troll threw down his huge club and barley missing Sonya by inches. While the troll tried to hit her, his other hand came out of no where and grabbed her knocking the wind out of her. Holding Sonya, he shook her and turned around. “LET ME GO!” Sonya yelled. Sonya got one leg free and she grabbed her sword and slashed the troll’s arm. It dropped Sonya while screaming in pain holding it arm. Sonya hit the ground hard and everything went black.

The ranger woke up to the troll’s screaming and went to grab the sword. He grabbed it just in time, while the troll continued to shriek in pain the ranger pulled Sonya over by some bushes. The ranger ran at the troll and with one quick jump he slashed the troll’s neck. The troll fell with in seconds. The ranger breathed deeply, and walked towards Sonya and picked her up. The horse was gone it ran away while they were fighting. “Shot.” He whispered under his breath. He began to walk away holding Sonya in his hands and a bloody sword.

Later that day the ranger stopped and Sonya woke up to a sore on her arms she looked at the there were deep cuts all over them. Her arms were stained with dried blood coming from the cuts. The ranger looked bruised and tired. “Let’s move on.” The ranger said. Sonya didn’t think it was right to prey but she wanted to so badly. She decided when they got out of the forest she would. Sonya followed the ranger and said nothing. Then finally they crawled out of the forest and the sun was going down and they were going to be left in the dark night. The ranger took Sonya’s arm and walked towards the rocky hills. The ranger found a cave that was cold and damp, Sonya looked at it disgusted. The ranger laughed a little at how she reacted. It was the first time Sonya heard any emotions from him. “What is so funny?” Sonya asked staring at him.

“Back where I lived people would have killed for a place like this.” He said. Sonya just signed. “I’ll be back in a bit.” He said quietly.

“Where are you going?” Sonya asked. “Get fire wood.” The ranger said. Sonya didn’t say anything but just looked away. Awhile after the ranger left Sonya went outside of the cave. She saw a brown horse and Sonya walked down to it. “Hey, what are you thinking, coming back here? You were free.” Sonya said petting the horse’s big nose. “Mm… what’s your name?” Sonya asked the horse still rubbing it big head. “Alibis.” Someone said behind her. “What?” Sonya asked. “His name is Alibis.” The ranger said. “It is a beautiful name. What does it mean?” Sonya asked. “Nothing.” The ranger said keeping his own secret. “I just thought I heard it before that is all. You don’t have to get mad.” Sonya said dropping that subject. “What is your name?” Sonya asked following the ranger back into the cave. He didn’t answer, so Sonya left the matter alone.

The ranger started a fire and to cook some type of meat. “Eat, it will help your regain your energy.” The ranger said staring at Sonya. “I don’t really eat meat.” Sonya said quietly. She always hated that people killed animals. She thought it was wrong to raise an animal for that purpose alone. The ranger didn’t say anything.

“My name is Randis.” He replied after along silence. Sonya looked up at him. She was a little shocked that he told her what his name was. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” Sonya asked making sure not to somehow offend him. He seemed more of a quiet type and didn’t like being asked to many questions. Sonya was holding her arm out of sight so he couldn’t see it. The ranger noticed this, “What is wrong with your arm?” He asked looking at it. “Nothing…” Sonya said quietly. “Well, then why are you clutching it? And hiding it.” Randis asked not dropping the subject. “Why do you care?” Sonya asked dodging his first question. Sonya was usually stubborn and so she didn’t want the ranger to look at her arm so she wouldn’t let him. “Why won’t you let me see it?” Randis said getting mad her. Sonya didn’t answer him, she didn’t have to show him her arm and she didn’t want him to see that she was really in pain.

“Just let me look at it!” Randis shouted mad at her. “There is nothing to see.” Sonya lied. Randis felt like he went to a new low after staring Sonya down. “It is just a scratch. Or a few.” She said softly holding out her arm. Randis reached for it. “It doesn’t look that bad but some cuts are really deep.” He stopped when Sonya flinched. “So how did you now where I was. And why did you kidnap me!” Sonya demanded to know. “I didn’t kidnap you! I saw a light from your camp. When I was in the forest earlier that day I had seen trolls wondering around. I thought they too would see the light and come after you. It was too late to warn you so I took you. Sorry I scared you. But you didn’t even thank me I saved your life!” Randis snapped at her. “Well I saved your life too!” Sonya yelled back feeling a little bad for snapping at him. “Sorry thank you.” Sonya said keeping her eyes on the ground. “What is your name?” Randis said, he was to proud to say thank you but Sonya could tell he was somewhat grateful. “Me-Sonya.” She answered. “That is a unique name.” Randis said quietly. Randis started to rap a cloth that he pulled out of his small bag around Sonya’s arm.
